Richard Dawkins - How does rock have a spirit?
Satish Kumar - Rock has spirit. Ask Hendry Moore, he couldn't have made those beautiful sculptures by himself.
One of my favorite guitarist Steve Vai is particularly picky about this guitar wood. The body and neck have to be from the same tree, rosewood neck is less bright than maple, certain wood resonates well with certain wood. etc etc. something hard to explain and has to be experienced I guess. Had he been asked - does guitar have a spirit? or does wood have a spirit? I would have loved to hear his answer.
Take it with a grain of salt. Science and belief have always been opposing forces. One answers with reasoning and the other answers that sound like questions to your experiences.
This piece, To me, sits somewhere in-between. It was inspired by memories of the city I grew up in. Standing in front of a giant temple/stupa I know how it feels, monkeys swarming around you in anticipation- I know how it feels. The playgrounds turned into buildings - I know how it feels. They became the solid blueprint to work on. Sort of like evidences. The composition itself was all spontaneous. I had no idea what I would make and how it would look until I made it. I left that to chance and the subconscious. I became a vehicle for the restless idea. The combination of memories and vision/fate provided me with invisible guidelines. In other words, the spirits took good care of me. I guess??
