spirits III- Myths and Folklore

The third part of the spirits series is based on myths and folklore. Our upbringings, the stories we heard that got passed down generations. It's in our blood, it's in our instincts. Even if it's in subtle nuances. In this case from the reference of the dance of Sakela.

As a descendant of Kirat, I wanted to show my understanding of how I feel or see the story of Sumnima and Parohang (our first ancestors) and our relationship with nature, how everything is in motion, the circular dance full of energy that one can sense it in the air, mimicking certain animals/birds and everyday choirs. It is said that Parohang fell in love with Sumnima although he was from the Heavens so he is represented by the mountains. Mt Everest to be exact of the Khumbu region. He then left to meditate for many years not knowing that during the time she had given birth to 4 children, The first ancestral decendents of the Kirats. Sunuwar , Rai , Limbu & Yakkha.

Sumnima in his absence asked the animals ( musk deer, spotted deer) , birds (black wagtail, ducks) and rivers around if they have seen him. One day he does come back to her surprise. He apologises and promises never to leave her. This piece tries to capture the joy of that. All the animals and birds and nature celebrate the re-union and this became the great dance of Sakela.
